Fill
'er Up Lane Kiffin has been stirring it up since he arrived at Tennessee, and this week it will be Gamecock fans who will have to relive one of Kiffin's best jabs. If you're at pump #4, don't be surprised if a Gamecock is filling your tank. The gas-pumping jokes will be back in vogue this week, after the Vols thumped Steve Spurrier's guys in Knoxville. The Tennessee Vols continued to play well, and battered South Carolina. The win was big for the "Big Orange", as they captured their first win over a ranked team, and added misery for USC in the process. Spurrier has seen this before....a hot start, followed by a weak finish. The Gamecocks were lucky to survive Vandy, but against the Vols, they were done by the end of the first half. Up next for South Carolina is a trip to Arkansas, followed by visits by the Gators and Clemson. Good luck. The way USC is playing, they will be hard-pressed to find a win down the stretch...again. The only thing that didn't work for Kiffin and his Vols against the old ball coach were the black jerseys. I know it was Halloween....I know Kiffin places a huge value on perception and street-cred....but those jerseys need to be sent down the Tennessee River, or sold to the nearest Adidas Outlet Store. One thing you can't discount is that UT is playing their best football of the season. Duke vs. UNC A great basketball tradition. Duke vs. UNC An interesting ACC football game. Don't get me wrong...nether team is a factor in the ACC race (and I know Duke is 3-1 in the Coastal), but this game has taken on an added twist, given the latest developments. The Blue Devils have won 3 straight conference games, for the first time in 15 years. The Tar Heels were outstanding, in dumping Virginia Tech in Lane Stadium. Bragging rights, indeed....and that will last until somebody shows up at Cameron Indoor or the Smith Center. Either way, it will be fun. LSU travels to Bama this week. I know the Tigers beat up on Tulane, and I know Bama had the week off.....something tells me that Bama and Mr. McElroy are ready to explode and find the end zone on a consistent basis. Nick Saban preached all last week that his team was tired mentally and physically after the Tennessee game.....and then the Tide practiced in pads. They will be ready to roll this week. Plus, it appears that the trifecta of Florida, Bama and Texas are locked and loaded for a BCS title game......and I know that is a dangerous thing to say, in early November. Does anybody think one of these teams is going to stub their toe between now and early December? College football is a crazy business and we see goofy scores every weekend, but I'm having a hard time seeing any of those teams going down before their respective conference championship games. Even though Florida State's defense tackles like my little girls Emmy and GG, I still can't wait to see Christian Ponder attack Clemson's defense on Saturday night. I think the Noles can put some points up on anybody...including Clemson. I just don't think they can play a lick of defense. It is embarrassing to watch their defense play....and it doesn't matter who they are playing....they don't tackle anybody. Good luck, with CJ Spiller. The atmosphere at Clemson this Saturday night will be spectacular. Can Clemson close the deal in the goofy Atlantic division? They control their destiny and have home games with FSU & UVa and a trip to NC State, in between. Anybody that can predict ACC football is either drunk or high as a kite. I can assure you that ACC officials and Tampa ACC Championship reps are praying for a Clemson - Georgia Tech title game. I know it's not Southern Fried Football™ related, but I absolutely loved watching Southern Cal get pulverized by the mighty Ducks of Oregon. The Trojans' defense was so bad that even FSU players thought they sucked. I'm sure the fans at Notre Dame and Ohio State are shaking their heads, wondering how they lost at home to the Trojans. |
